Disarmament is the process of the separation of weapons and ammunition from demobilized military and paramilitary organisations, often in post-conflict situations.
To be successful, this process involves several key elements, which must be managed concurrently. Disarmament projects should incorporate embedded systems of work that ensure safety and transparency to both donors and to those surrendering their weapons.
WHA can assist clients, Government aid agencies, NGOs and other sponsors in the effective design and execution of disarmament projects.
Research and assessment in the feasibility, methodology, resources and financial commitment required to conduct a weapons and ammunition recovery program. This activity is invariably conducted in country and also covers political, socioeconomic and safety aspects.
WHA can conduct the design and development of turnkey weapons and ammunition recovery programs that include the following elements:
- Incentives
- Security, safety and environmental systems
- Logistics
- Accountability and transparency
- Schedule and budget
- Destruction including independent verification
- Disarmament program supervision
Because we an independent organisation and maintain effective quality systems we have an embedded capability to conduct QA/QC and verification for third party projects.
WHA disarmament solutions are based upon a developed methodology which promotes a safe system of work and that is transparent to donors.
Safety in the handling, movement, storage and destruction of weapons and ammunition are considered to be fundamental disarmament project considerations.
